Gigi Gaston -- who directed and produced a documentary on the life of singer-songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins, "The Cream Will Rise" -- has been tapped to direct indie pic "{Beyond City Limits" for Newman/Tooley Films and Big Picture Entertainment. A mid-June start date is planned.

Written by John McMahon, ("Broken Vessels") the story is described as "Thelma & Louise" meets "Pulp Fiction" as three women take matters into their own hands when their boyfriends cheat them out of their takes in a desert casino heist. The women turn the men against each other and position themselves to reap the rewards from the robbery.

Tucker Tookey, Vincent Newman and Joey Nittolo are producing. John Saviano and Matt Terzian will co-produce while Justin Urbas will be executive produced. Casting is under way.

Gaston was repped in the deal by Innovative Artists' Graham Kaye. Her "Cream" which ran at numerous festivals including the Aspen Film Festival and the Los Angeles based Outfest Film Festival, will be sold to distributors upon the release of Hawkins' third album, "Timbre", scheduled for June 29 on Columbia Records.

Gaston, who is repped by ICM and managers Connie Tavel, Chris Ridenhour and Vanessa Livingston, previously sold "Magda Lepescu" a pitch to Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Her spec script "Unreliably Yours" is in development at Initial Entertainment Group.
